Neurological conditions are conditions that affect your brain, spine, and peripheral nerves, such as Brain Injury, Concussion, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Motor Neurone Disease, Ataxia and other progressive Neurological conditions. If you have a neurological condition you may have problems with muscle tone, movement, mobility (walking) strength, balance and co-ordination.
As well as the above structural neurolgical conditions (meaning a scan or other investigations show there is damage) we also specialise in treating people who do not have a structural neurological condition, but have the same symptoms, having problems with muscle tone, movement, mobility (walking) strength, balance and co-ordination. These are often called Functional Neurological Disorders (FND).
Other conditions we treat are disorders of the autonomic nervous system, including Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) and Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS)
We will use our knowledge, skills and experience, with some technology to assist, completing a comprehensive and holistic assessment, that means we treat you as a person, not a condition and look at all the areas of your life that may be impacted. We will then discuss with you to formulate a treatment plan that is specific to you to address to help maintain or improve all areas of physical function and well being.
In addition and to complement the treatments we offer, we also provide a specialist spasticity service. This can be for our existing clients, or as a specialist service for people who may be receiving physiotherapy with other therapists.
Treatment of spasticity has traditionally been with postural management, stretches, splinting, exercise and Botulinum Toxin (Botox). There is now strong evidence that treating spasticity using Shockwave therapy is as effective or more effective than Botox. Additional benefits are that it is non invasive (nothing pierces your skin) , there are no toxins entering your body and it is safe and effective with minimal side effects.
Typically you would need six sessions, an initial assessment session, when treatment will be started if appropriate, and a further five sessions at weekly intervals. If it is felt that further sessions would be appropriate these can be added on.
